Two Ways To Build A Sharp Chevelle

Different strokes for different folks-that's what keeps hot rodding interesting. Take these two sweet '67 Chevelles for example. At one end of the hot rod spectrum we have Ken Dutton's clean, mostly original example. We love it just as it is-the Butternut Yellow paint paired with steelies and redline tires give it a classic muscle car look, and the swapped-in 427 underhood gets lots of respect at car shows and cruise-ins.

At the other end is Mark Williams' equally droolworthy 768hp street beast. It has the same classic look but provides much more pleasure from pushing the pedal. Honestly, we could see ourselves happily hanging our arm in the window of either. Which one is your style?

They're opposite takes but both examples of well-built Chevelles. Ken Dutton's redlines are from Diamondback while Mark Williams' traction comes via Mickey Thompsons on Weld Alumastars. As you'd guess, Ken's chassis is basically stock, but Mark's has a ladder-barred rear and Fat Man control arms up front with Aerospace Engineering brakes. While set up in race trim, Williams' Chevelle has yet to see a dragstrip.

The 425-horse 427 makes an honest 418 hp with factory iron heads, intake, and exhaust manifolds and a rebuilt short-block with unknown internals.

Over here, however, we have 555 ci based on a Dart Big M block with a Callies crank, Oliver billet rods, JE pistons, and Merlin Stage IV heads cranking out 768 hp at 6,800 rpm and 690 lb-ft at 5,400. Just in case something really mean rolls up, a Wilson two-stage nitrous system stands ready to kick in 500 more. The engine was built by Steve Johnson at AMS Racing Engines.
