BBK '05-AND-later Mustang GT Throttle Body, Cold-Air Kit, and CROSS-pipe
Late-model Mustangs are the darlings of the aftermarket world, responding very well to quick and easy bolt-on parts, and the '05-and-later GT is no exception. We went to BBK to see what kind of power could be made with the most popular Mustang bolt-ons--a bigger throttle body, a cold-air kit, and a cross-pipe. Our test car is a stock '06 GT five-speed with just a couple thousand miles on it. Ford advertises 300 hp at the flywheel, and our base run on BBK's chassis dyno netted 266.67 hp to the wheels with 274.76 lb-ft of torque.
Our first upgrade was the final prototype for BBK's new catalytic cross-pipe, which took all of 20 minutes to install. The factory Mustang mufflers have a nice sound to them, but BBK's freer-flowing cross-pipe brought out an even more impressive rumble. On the dyno, it resulted in average numbers of 276.56 hp and 283.61 lb-ft of torque, an improvement of 9.89 hp and 8.85 lb-ft.
The redesigned 4.6L intake makes removal of the throttle body and air cleaner a breeze, but some minor assembly is required, as BBK's twin 62mm throttle body reuses the factory throttle-body motor housing, and the cold-air induction reuses the original mass air meter. All factory hardware and mounting locations are utilized, and after assembly, the system bolts in like a factory piece. Back on the dyno with the cross-pipe still in place, the intake parts were good for an average of 297.48 hp and 315.27 lb-ft of torque. --Christopher Campbell
