Dressed in classy Formal Black, the Ultimate Bee represents what the aero-body option would have looked like on the Super Bee platform, which was more affordable than the Charger R/T. Thanks to the common Charger body shell, the Dayclona team was able to use the pioneering work done on its Charger Daytona as a jumping-off point. The nose cone is similar to the G-Series Charger Daytona but incorporates the lower grille opening of a production '70 SuperBird for a smoother look. At the rear, the Charger's dual-airfoil wing is simplified to a single-airfoil configuration, both versions having been tested on the 31/48-scale wind-tunnel models.
The budget Super Bee theme is supported underhood where a nearly stock 440 Six Pack resides. OK, a 440 Six Pack may only be considered budget-minded when compared to a Hemi, but it sure beats looking at a bread-and-butter 383 Magnum, the standard Super Bee motor for the '71.
While the Ultimate Bee is packed with extra cost options like rear-window louvers, a Ramcharger hood, factory electric sunroof, power steering, brakes and more, it's a hypothetical Wedge-headed everyman model that complements its Hemi siblings and helps bring the G-Series wing-car concept back down to earth. Is the Dayclona team finished with its revisionist-history lesson? Gary Beineke only admits they aren't done yet and will have another mind-blower ready soon. Hint, it's another never-was wing car that was oh-so close to making production for the '70 model year. Look for it on the Mopar show circuit about the time you read this. HRM
