One of the hottest growth areas in hot rodding is the diesel market, which is covered in depth by our sister magazine Diesel Power. The magazine holds an annual event called the Diesel Power Challenge, which consists of various performance tests to determine who has the baddest diesel-powered truck around.

The '07 event was won by Michael Tomac in his single-turbocharged, nitrous-injected, '02 Chevy 2500 HD, and he laid down some pretty impressive numbers. After making 750 rwhp and 1,300 rwtq (good for Third) on the chassis dyno, Tomac placed First at the drags with an 11.55 at 122 mph on BFG All-Terrain tires. Even more impressive was his eighth-mile speed of 72 mph while hooked to this trailer carrying a John Deere loader for a combined weight of just under 20,000 pounds. For the 100-mile ride and drive portion of the test, he was able to use his laptop to put a "stock" tune back in the truck and averaged almost 21 mpg. Wow.-Jason sands

How They Make It:
Aeromotive A1000 Fuel PumpHorsepower requires fuel, and the more horsepower, the bigger the fuel system needs to be. At a certain point, a stock fuel pump just can't keep up, necessitating the installation of a performance fuel pump, bigger lines, and so on. With today's technology, it's brutally easy to make ridiculous horsepower for the street or track, and Aeromotive has a fuel system to fit nearly any power level you're shooting for. The company's most popular pump is the A1000, which you'll find on everything from 12-second 5.0L Mustangs to our own Project F-Bomb. This pump flows 600 pounds of fuel per hour at 45 psi and 13.5 volts (and 800 pounds at 8 psi), which Aeromotive claims will support 1,300 hp in a naturally aspirated, carbureted engine or 1,100 hp naturally aspirated with EFI. It's also fully submersible so you can mount it in the tank, which helps keep it cool and quiet. Although most inline pumps are characterized as EFI pumps, all Aeromotive inlines can be used in carbureted applications with the proper Aeromotive bypass-style regulator and have become very popular in both blowthrough and naturally aspirated, carbureted applications. These pumps are not recommended for methanol, but they are used in a wide variety of gasoline and E85 applications.

There's a reason we see Aeromotive fuel pumps on a lot of race cars; company founder Steve Matusek and nearly everyone else at Aeromotive is hard-core into racing. Matusek's twin-turbo modmotored Mustang ran the quickest and fastest pass ever in the NMRA's Pro 5.0 class (6.54 at 215 mph), and his daughter Kristen won an NHRA National Championship in her Junior Dragster.
